The Catacombs are one of the most striking and unforgettable Odessa attractions. They are located practically under the whole city. The Odessa catacombs are the former underground quarry where stones were mined to build Odessa in 19th -20th centuries. This is a fantastic huge network of labyrinths and tunnels expanding for 3 thousand kilometers under Odessa and its suburbs (Nerubayskoye village, Usatovo village). It is remarkable that quite a half of it is not explored yet and conceals artifacts of the World War II and as rumoured, treasures of contrabandists.
The Odessa Catacombs are especially popular with visitors of the city as well as the local population but it is allowed to go there only in excursion groups as it is easy to get lost there. Practically all excursions to the Odessa Catacombs begin near Nerobayskoye village of Belyayevsky district of the Odessa region. There were partisan headquarters there during the war and it is possible to have a look at it.
